Classroom kanavugal! TV

Classroom kanavugal! TV
Classroom kanavugal! TV

The clock strikes 8 in the evening. In a flash, I grab the remote and switch to Vijay TV. The chirpy tune, 'Kanavugal Kaanum Vayasaachu, Ilamaikku Mukavari Kadachachu...' breaks the deafening silence. As I stare wide eyed into the television set, I am transported to another world, into a world where friends are greeted as 'machi' and 'mama', teachers are the indisputable victims and where for once, studies take a back seat. It is finally time for 'Kana Kaanum Kaalangal'

'Kana Kaanum Kaalangal' is a show aired on Star Vijay four days a week. It's a serial about school life, society, crushes and, most importantly, friendship. The story basically revolves around two 'gangs'. One of the them, being the very 'hi-fi' one where all the students travel in bikes to school and speak in English (peter - as you would call it). The other gang is essentially the 'local' one. Here, the guys quite on the contrary, roam about in bicycles and speak in Tamil 'only'. However, both the gangs have one thing in common – 'true friendship', which actually forms the essence of the show.

The show also involves the character of Raghavi, a young girl who loses her parents in the tsunami and is adopted by another family who lose one of their daughters in the same. Sanghavi, their other daughter, hates the inclusion of Raghavi in the house and hence nurses a grudge against her. As these two fight their individual challenges in life, they find solace among their friends: The former joining the local gang and the latter being a part of the hi-fi group.

The best part of this show is the screenplay and the acting. All the actors fit into their roles perfectly and maintain a wonderful rapport. This makes the viewers identify themselves with the character.

The role of 'black' Pandi is simply amazing as the guy cracks you up with his great comic timing. Joe, on the other hand, impresses with his comical poetic lines. The characters of Bala and Pachai too add zing to the show. While Bala comes from a family where his father is a police officer and constantly ridicules him for his playfulness, Pachai suffers a deep inferiority complex because of his financial status. Yet, he studies really well and carries his parent's wishes to become a breadwinner of the family.

The roles of Vineeth and Krish too are really well-crafted and are extremely popular among the girls. Both of them play the role of rich kids effectively. The two face several personal problems but while Vineeth helps himself get over it, Krish at one point succumbs to drugs.

Another specimen of this group is Unni who most of the time is busy flirting and sending letters to girls. Rishi is extremely techno-savvy but doesn't put his ideas to proper use.

“Personally, I like the show a lot because I'm just out of school and I feel I can relate to the characters a lot better. I like Bala's character, I also like Krish mainly because of his looks!” says Vidhya.

'Mama', 'machi', 'mappila', 'thala'...all these which are otherwise used by students in schools and colleges are brought out amazingly on screen. The dialogues are very casual.

The day to day 'kalaichifying', silly pranks and 'mokkai' jokes are a delight to watch. Though a few more shows like this one have already been on air earlier in Hindi like 'Hip Hip Hurray' and 'Dhoom Machao Dhoom' (Disney), it is the first time in Tamil that such a show has captured the attention of students and parents alike. I realise that I squeezed out time last year during my 12th standard to watch the show everyday!

“Whenever I watch the show, I feel really relaxed. It has a perfect blend of humour, fun and seriousness. It's a perfect representation of school life and the dialogues are too good!” chirps Deepthi.

Directed by R Prabhu Kanna, the show attempts to catch the attention of the youth, which it does. While most soap operas today are confined to the usual household trauma, 'Kana Kaanum Kaalangal' is definitely a big step towards the changing scenario of the television industry. It has completed a hundred episodes and the show is gathering more popularity.

Hoping that the show keeps the momentum going, here's wishing them all the best!

Time to dream "Kanaa Kaanum Kalangal" on Vijay TV is about fun and friendship during student days

Time to dream "Kanaa Kaanum Kalangal" on Vijay TV is about fun and friendship during student days
HAVING A GOOD TIME The cast of the serial

If you're familiar with the sibling rivalry between Sangavi and Raghavi, the rib-tickling banter of Pandi, Pachai, Joe and Bala, the high jinks of the well-heeled Vineet, Unni, Rishi and Krish — innocent fun with a scheming Principal as backdrop, you have been watching "Kanaa Kaanum Kaalangal" aired on Vijay TV at 8 p.m. KKK, with high school life at its heart, is a sitcom in which boys are everyday boys conditioned only by their screen backgrounds. They jibe, fight, throw impulsive pranks, forget quickly and move on. The girls are not obsessed by the need to be "good" and parents have shades of grey in their portrayals. Change the language, the episodes could have been set in any part of the country.

Your surprise loses its edge when you discover it is being directed by Film Institute-trained Prabhu Kannaa whose "Paramapadam" won him a national Best Director award and "LN Chandru 4th B" was on a festival panorama. Watch him work and you know why both K. Balachander and Balu Mahendra called to pat him. "It took us eight months to get it on the floor," he said. "I spent the first two weeks de-toxing the cast of overacting and exaggeration. Getting them to speak naturally was a challenge." Said L. Harendra, senior project executive, Timeframes, "The groundwork was done by Vijay TV. They picked the actors from the 5,000 applications received in response to an ad. A two-day workshop taught them how to face the camera."

None of the actors except one is a school student. Sanghavi (Monisha) is a BDS intern, others are in college or are employed. "Schedules are a nightmare," agreed Prabhu. "We work around college and work hours." But not all are greenhorns. You've seen Raghavi (Hemalatha) in "Basha" and "Suryavamsam" and as kutti Kaveri in "Chitti."

Pandi (Lingeswaran) has acted in several movies. For all of them, however, the serial is turning out to be a fresh experience. "I'm learning to act all over again," said Raghavi. "We've got our school life back," said the boys. "This is no different from what we do off the sets."

The serial's strongest point is the dialogue. "We collected 200-300 phrases from students," said Prabhu's wife Sheeba who designed the uniforms. "Brahma is our writer. The boys contribute too. The focus will be on friendship, though there's a subtle `crush' angle."

Will they do a mega serial flip-flop? "No," said Prabhu. "I came into this reluctantly. I'll pack up when the students finish high school."
